Remember

I promised myself that when I had my own home, I would always have an American Flag posted. I don’t know if this is common everywhere, but here in Rexburg all of the local churches put up flags in everyone’s yards as a service project on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. It is really awesome to drive through the neighborhoods and see the masses of American Flags proudly blowing in the wind. Yet I think to myself, why do we have to wait for these two special days to put up flags and show our love for our country? I’m an American every day of the year, not just two. And I’m proud of it. So I went to the store yesterday and picked up a flag:

Morally Straight

The Boy Scouts of America will soon be voting on its policy to include or exclude gay leaders and members from the organization. I have recently become a Venture Scout Adviser for the young men in my local congregation and I have been learning more about the wonderful program and the positive impact it has on the young men of this nation. I am an Eagle Scout myself and very proud to hold that title. As a youth leader scouting has come to mean even more to me and I believe it is a program inspired by God. I believe wholeheartedly in the inspired words of the scout oath and law:

On Patriotism and America

It’s been a while since I’ve spewed out some thoughts on here. I’ve been randomly pondering patriotism a lot recently and I’ve wanted to write a blog about it. I thought I’d wait until all of the artificial 4th of July “patriotism” passed over. Veterans day, ironically, is much less glorified but it has more direct significance in my life. So this one is for Grandpa Hyde, Dad, and my big bro Jared who have given part of their lives to serve this nation.

Of Commandments, “Rules,” and Obedience

One of the things that I and my LDS friends have been criticized (or just looked at funny) for is how “strict” our church is. I guess people think we have a lot of “rules.” In a way, they might be right about that. “Rules” really isn’t the best word for it though. Even the word “commandments” can make some people a little uneasy. When I hear it though, I have learned to think of it as a guide line. Basically God’s commandments say, “if you do this, you will be happy and you will become a better person. If not, you miss out on both of those.” Like someone just told me, “It is impossible to break the commandments. You can only break yourself against them.” I want to explain what this means and tell you why I do the things that I do; call them rules, commandments, or whatever they are. The Art of J-Walking

This is pretty petty and maybe just a little humorous, but a passion nonetheless. I don’t know if I can even say that it’s a passion. Maybe it’s more of a pet peeve. Either way, it’s something people need to understand.

Firstly, I have to admit it. I am an avid j-walker. It started out as a way to be lazy and cut corners but has developed into much more than that. I have discovered that I like to be in control of whether I am going to walk in front of a car or not. I don’t just cross the street like I own it though. I wait until there are clearly no cars around and then cross. That way, I don’t ever have to leave it up to the ambiguous and sometimes ignored right-of-way. Read the rest of this entry »

Where’d all the good music go?

I have been really sad about my current car situation for many reasons. One of the biggest annoyances is not the lack of heat and A/C but the lack of a functional radio. One of the first things people should know about me is my love for music. It is one of my biggest passions.

So here I am taking a five-hour car trip and I’m really wishing I had brought some CD’s with me. Do people actually listen to the radio anymore? If I had nickel for every time someone referred to sex in their song, I’d be rich. Maybe that’s the problem. Somehow every time someone sings about some sort of promiscuity, there are another thousand bucks in their pocket. Read the rest of this entry »

A Helper I Can’t Live Without

From the title of this and if you know me, you may be thinking my wife is the strength and help I am referring to. However, here I’m referring to the one who led me to my wife and many other things.

There are a whole ton of decisions that face us in life. It can be a pretty big deal or just a small day-to-day thing. Having just recently made probably the hugest decision I ever will (getting married), I’ve been thinking about how good it feels to be confident in many decisions I make. I’m learning more and more how each one, great or small, has shaped my life -for good or for bad- and will continue to do so. Read the rest of this entry »
